Given all that has happened in 2020, the elections on both the state and federal level have taken on a greater urgency. We are facing a triple crises of the COVID-19 pandemic, economic inequality exacerbated by the pandemic and a long deferred need to genuinely address racial injustice in our country. The people we elect will make decisions that directly effect our health and safety, at school and in the workplace. They will also determine whether we live up to our values, that all Americans should be treated equally.
THIS YEAR’S SCHOLARSHIP QUESTION IS –
“Since voting is so important, what do you think should be done to ensure every citizen can exercise his or her right to vote in Nov. 2020 without endangering their lives? Are there better solutions than in-person voting, and voting on election day only? If voting is not done in person, how do we account for election security and making sure that our votes are counted? How can we make sure that the voices of working people are heard in this election?“

New Hampshire AFL-CIO Announces their Endorsements in the 2019 Municipal Elections
Incumbent mayors Joyce Craig (Manchester) and Jim Donchess (Nashua) lead list of worker-friendly candidates.
(Hooksett, NH – October 28th, 2019) Following a vote by the New Hampshire AFL-CIO’s Executive Council, Pres. Glenn Brackett has released a list of the NH AFL-CIO’s endorsed candidates in next week’s 2019 municipal elections.
“We had a great list of candidates to choose from this year and we’re happy to be able to throw our support behind proven leaders like Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig and Nashua Mayor Jim Donchess,” Brackett said. “Our candidates bring a range of experience and will build stronger, more worker-friendly local governments across the state. We have first-time candidates with strong backgrounds like AFL-CIO leader Laura Hainey running for Rochester City Council. We’re also happy to show our support for veteran elected officials and long-time allies like fmr. Sen. Andy Hosmer in his campaign for mayor.”
Focussing on cities with high densities of union members, the New Hampshire AFL-CIO opted to endorse slates of candidates in Manchester, Nashua, and Rochester, NH’s sixth largest community. A complete list is attached below.

First Place – This award, for $1750, goes to Alysse Cleasby. Her father is a member of AFGE, Local #948. Alysse will be attending Bates College as a freshman this year. Congratulations Alysse!!
Second Place – The second-place award, for $1250, goes to Bethany Boulanger. Her father is a member of NALC #44. Bethany will be attending Boston University this year as a Junior. She also received a scholarship award from the NH AFL-CIO in 2017 & again in 2018, following in the footsteps of a brother who won in 2016! Congratulations Bethany!!
Third/Fourth Place – Haley Johnson-McDermott, who will be attending NHTI as a senior this year & Curtis Newton, who will be attending UNH as a junior, both tied & will each receive a scholarship for $750. Haley’s father is a member of the Ironworkers Union, Local #7 and Curtis’s mother is a member of AFT, Local #1044. Congratulation Haley and Curtis!
Fifth Place – The fifth-place award, for $500, goes to Wade Lundrum, who will be attending Univ. of VT as a sophomore. Wade’s mother is a member of AFT #1044 and brother was a previous winner of an AFL-CIO scholarship. Congratulations Wade!

This year, in honor of Sister Linda Horan, the NH AFL-CIO will again award scholarship assistance. Members in good standing of an affiliated local union, their spouses, children, grandchildren, stepchildren, or legal wards are encouraged to apply. A minimum of three scholarships will be awarded; one for $1,500, one for $1,000 and one for $750. Additional prizes may be awarded contingent on funding available. Scholarship applicants must submit a 750-1,000 word (3 to 4 pages double-spaced) essay on the following topic: Many people, including several presidential candidates for the 2020 primary, have called for eliminating the Electoral College. Do you think that we should make this change to our national election process? Would it improve or diminish confidence and trust in our electoral system? How would this change effect the ability of working people to make their voices heard through the ballot box?
Essays will be judged on understanding, writing style, and significance to Labor Unions. Applicants are encouraged to draw on the experiences of their families and communities. Two copies of the essay must be submitted – one may be a photocopy. All wording identifying the union member or the name of the member’s union will be redacted, so please avoid use of such identifying information in your essay.
A completed application form must be verified by your local union official and must accompany the essay. Forms are available from your local union or the NH AFL-CIO, 161 Londonderry Turnpike, Hooksett, NH 03106 (or call 603-623-7302).
The scholarship award(s) will be announced on or before August 13, 2019. Winners will also be honored at the NH-AFL-CIO’s annual LABOR Day Breakfast. Winners must provide proof of undergraduate enrollment in a college, community college, university, or recognized trade school for the fall semester, 2019.
Essays and application forms must be received by the NH AFL-CIO Scholarship Committee, no later than 4:00 p.m., MONDAY, July 29, 2019 at: NH AFL-CIO, 161 Londonderry Turnpike, Hooksett, NH 03106.
The informational picketing at Manchester Airport is STILL ON tomorrow from 5am-10am. The announcement today was only a short term solution, and we need to make sure the federal government knows that it can not bargain with the lives and safety of hard working people. Members of the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists (PASS) will be picketing at the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) this coming Saturday, January 26, 5:00 – 10:00 AM. These hardworking men and women have been working without pay over the government shutdown, doing the hard work of keeping air travel safe.
Here are the details for the picketing:
Saturday, January 26, 2019 5:00a.m-10:00a.m. Terminal side South of the first set of doors (We will meet here) We have PASS informational signs and handouts. The location will be outside the terminal, with the ability to rotate inside for coffee and breaks to warm up, so please dress appropriately – jacket, hat, gloves etc.
Parking is available in economy (short walk) or in the parking garage with a skybridge connected to the terminal.

Many are honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who was assassinated while standing in solidarity with striking sanitation workers struggling to unionize through AFSCME. He personified Faith & Labor together. But today, as anti-union, anti-worker sentiment is running rampant throughout the U.S., isn’t it important to build this same sense of faith & labor solidarity right here in New Hampshire? A number of individuals and groups have come together to explore the power of a stronger FAITH-LABOR PARTNERSHIP in NH: Saturday February 9 (9-1; 8:30 registration) at the State Employees Association offices in Concord (207 North Main Street). Light lunch will be provided. Also, Dr. Joerg Rieger, co-author of the book Unified We Are a Force: How Faith and Labor Can Overcome America’s Inequalities will join us briefly by Skype.
