Sixty million workers nationwide say they would join a union if they could. Federal law promises these workers have the right to organize and join a union. However, when workers try to organize, they face aggressive anti-union campaigns with tactics including lies, intimidation, threats of shut down, and illegal firings.
A common tactic used during an organizing drive are mandatory meetings. Mandatory meetings force workers to stay in a room, listening to the perspective of the employer without any protection. Would you support legislation allowing workers the right to leave the room without fear of retaliation when topics of religion, politics, or union organizing are discussed?

The economic crisis has affected every American; state and local pension plans also have been affected. some people are using the economic crisis as a new call to end these plans. Pension plans are one of the most important benefits workers have. There is a national effort under way to eliminate the defined-benefit pension plans for teachers, other school employees, and state and local government employees. We believe data can be a powerful tool that helps us understand what is working in the classroom. However, we believe that all teacher development and evaluation systems must take into consideration teacher practice. But just as the current snapshot form of teacher observation isn’t adequate, the same is true for a single standardized test score. Will you support efforts to put in place teacher development and evaluation systems that look at a full range of a teacher’s skills and do not rely solely on one measure:

Many workers are faced with making tough choices, especially during a major event in their lives, like the birth of a child or a medical emergency requiring the need to take time off but are unable to do so because they cannot afford the leave. Thirty four percent of the men and women who take FMLA take it without pay. In fact, nearly ten percent of workers receiving less than full pay during their longest leave go onto public assistance to cover the loss of wages.
Would you support creating a voluntary paid leave system that would provide new parents or families that are experiencing a medical crisis access to financial assistance, that woulb be based on pre-leave wages shared equally between the employer and employee?

In the state procurement process, particularly in building and construction (but in the contracting-out of services as well), often the low bid does not translate into the best value for taxpayers. Achieving the best value for taxpayers means recognizing all costs as well as the potential unintended consequences of public procurement decisions. For example, if a low bidder achieves cost savings by misclassifying workers, this results in lost state and federal tax revenue and shifts workers' compensation and health insurance costs (due to an increase in uncompensated care costs for the working uninsured) onto the public. If a low bidder achieves cost savings by cutting back on the training, skill level or experience of its workforce or the use of substandard materials, the result can be a shoddy or unsafe work and a less-than-quality end product. Further, it is detrimental to the public interest and the community, if contractors who don't follow labor, tax, insurance or safety laws are given an advantage over contractors who follow the law, act as responsible corporate citizens, and hire New Hampshire workers at decent wages and benefits. In 2010 the state legislature passed SB 495 which will study these important components. A major provision of the bill allows for pilot projects to be implemented taking into account the above mentioned provision.
Will you advocate to state agencies that pilot projects must be implemented to study the positive effects of provisions like health care coverage, retirement security, etc?
